Abstract

The current thesis describes the fabrication, characterization, and optimization of a novel biomedical Ti-Mg composite (BIACOM) intended for dental application. The research on materials for such applications is very intensive worldwide at present and in this respect, the topic of the thesis is very actual. The first chapter of the thesis, Literature review, summarizes present knowledge on materials for dental applications. It is mainly focused on those materials, forming the above-mentioned composite, i.e. Ti and Mg alloys and their combinations. The high number of references (about 86) related to this part shows that the author is familiar with the field in detail. In the second chapter, the author defines the main aim of the work and the ways how to realize it. The third part is devoted to the description of the methodology used in the author’s experiments. The experimental work comprised of powder metallurgical techniques for the production of the composites, and their thermal and mechanical treatment; microstructural characterization of the obtained and deformed materials by various electron microscopy techniques and methods of thermal analysis; mechanical characterization including tensile and fatigue testing; degradation processes related to the functionality of the material in live organisms; and various characterization of the material from the viewpoint of the interaction with cells (cyto- and genotoxicity and cell viability). The above list of the experimental techniques, which were chosen adequately to the focus of the thesis, is remarkable. The fourth part of the thesis is devoted to the results and discussion. The results are well described in detail. Of course, any work can continue endless and it is positive for the author and his supervisor that they decided to stop the experiments and write the compact thesis in the submitted form. Ultimately, we can say that the topic of the thesis is actual, the chosen experimental techniques were adequate to the focus of the thesis, the thesis provides new original results, which contribute to further progress of science, and the thesis fulfills the designated aim. Therefore, we can conclude that the thesis providing original scientific results leading to the development of an optimized biomedical alloy.
