Abstract

This work aims at isolation and identification of some endophytic fungi from some wild Rumex species and evaluating them and the plant extracts as biomedicine in the treatment of some human pathogenic bacteria so our objectives were: Collection of Rumex species from natural habitats (Rumex dentatus from cultivated land, Rumex pictus from Deltaic Mediterranean coast, and Rumex vesicarius from Wadi Araba, north of the Eastern Desert), Isolate, identify and characterize the endophytic fungi inhabiting three Rumex species growing in different habitats, investigation of the biological activity of the isolated endophytic fungi (antimicrobial and antioxidant activities), determination of the chemical constituents produced by the host, determination of the biological activity of Rumex species extracts. 3 strains of endophytic fungi were identified (Aspergillus flavus, A. niger and Penicillium notatum), as the results of the morphological and microscopic examines showed for these strains. According to phytoconstituent data, the concentration of bioactive compounds in shoot and root of Rumex spp. followed the order phenolics ˃ tannins ˃ flavonoid ˃ alkaloid ˃ saponins. Regarding the plant species, the concentrations of bioactive compounds were in Rumex vesicarius > R. pictus > R. dentatus. . It has been found that, the shoot extracts of Rumex vesicarius and R. pictus showed the strongest antioxidant activity, while the extracts of Rumex dentatus exhibited a moderate antioxidant activity. Concerning the allelopathic potentiality, three Rumex species could be used as biocontrol (biofriend) for control management of nuisance weed Chenopodium murale which exhibited intensive competition with the summer crops in Egypt.
