Abstract

Respiratory infections are one of the leading causes of death in the world. Most causes of respiratory infections are health associated infections. In addition to COVID-19, a viral infection that causes severe acute respiratory syndrome, which has spread rapidly worldwide and poses serious problems in terms of morbidity and mortality. In Egypt, between 3January, 2020 and 17 June, 2022, Egypt recorded 514,008 confirmed cases and 20,247 deaths. The reason for the spread of health care-related infections is due to the lack of adherence to preventive measures and infection control during processing respiratory equipment such as bronchoscopes. Adherence to the infection, Prevention and Control Program has become mandatory to respond to outbreaks of infectious diseases and to provide safe, high-quality patient care. Nurses play an important role in the process of handling respiratory equipment. Therefore, there is an urgent need to design a protocol for the nursing staff to improve their level of knowledge and develop their performance on processing respiratory devices efficiently and effectively. This study aimed to design protocol for nursing staff to manage respiratory instrument processing effectively. Method : A Mixed research study design was used throughout this study. Setting : The study was conducted at four governmental hospitals in Mansoura city. (Chest hospital, Mansoura university hospital, Talkha, and Mansoura general hospital). Sample size: the study was carried out on 50 nurses who are responsible for instrument processing. The researcher used seven tools in this study. Tool I : Nurses’ socio demographic and occupational characteristics self-administrated questionnaire. Tool II: self-administrated questionnaire to assess the nurses’ knowledge about instrument processing process (cleaning, disinfection, inspection, packing, sterilization, transport, storage, use and infection control measure), Tool III: Rubric observational checklist of respiratory instrument processing performance, Tool IV : Self-administered scale to assess attitude of nursing staff about the management of respiratory instrument processing. Tool V : nurse’s opinion, expectations and desires regarding the protocol through focus group discussion. Tool VI : Evaluation of internal validity of the designed protocol by Delphi rounds. Tool VII : Evaluation of the designed protocol using AGREE II Instrument, 2009. Results : the current study indicates that 60%, 66 % of studied nurses have poor total score level of knowledge and improper performance respectively regarding respiratory instrument processing. All experts and nurses reported that the designed protocol was clear and attractive. Besides, almost all the experts mentioned that it has enhanced the availability of information in different educational material. Conclusion and Recommendation : The designed protocol can be considered an effective educational material, therefore it is recommended to evaluate the effectiveness and the external validity of the designed protocol in improving nurses’ knowledge and performance about respiratory instrument processing.
