Abstract

In Egypt, the developed sustainable framework of indoor environmental quality (IEQ) in healthcare buildings is well established as a developing tool that identifies the likely impacts associated with developments and determines their level of significance. Notwithstanding its extensive use in the Egyptian context, certain limitations are now being increasingly recognized regarding achieving better indoor environmental quality and sustainable development within hospital buildings at an early stage of Design processes. This research advocates the adoption of the proposed framework of indoor environmental quality (IEQ) to achieve sustainable development in design and planning processes, because of its role in enhancing better indoor environmental quality and environmental assessment practice within healthcare buildings in Egypt. The current study develops a framework and procedures for integrating IEQ criteria into Egyptian Hospital buildings design and planning, to achieve better indoor environmental quality and sustainable development within hospital buildings that promote occupants’ health inside hospital buildings. It first reviews the theory of IEQ and discusses its benefits and principles; it identifies the context factors supporting the potential adoption of IEQ framework, then a set of core structural elements around which an IEQ framework system should be composed is identified. A comparative analysis of 2 selected hospital buildings for IEQ application and assessment is undertaken to explore the international practice and to identify how IEQ parameters and related sustainable best practices are regulated in these countries. This assists in setting up a sustainable framework of alternatives and corrective actions related to the structural IEQ core elements, then a generic methodology for designing indoor environmental quality within healthcare buildings which is used as guidance for designing hospital buildings with better and healthy IEQ in Egypt. In light of the main aim of the thesis, the study investigates the Egyptian context to explore the status and potential of adopting IEQ; it evaluates the environmental context against the designing parameters and criteria to justify and form the basis for the proposals. To clearly understand the Egyptian context, 133 interviews were carried out to obtain evidence of the actual situations of nominated the hospital building as a case study. Finally, a proposed framework for IEQ application and assessment for better and healthy indoor environmental quality in healthcare buildings in Egypt.
