Abstract

Plastic surgery is a dynamic field experienced by general practitioners, medical students, health professionals, and the public. The main health care professionals in the community who are involved in the follow-up of plastic surgery patients are nurses. Specifically, the field of plastic surgery focuses on the resection, repair, replacement and reconstruction of defects of form and function of the skin and its underlying anatomic structures, including the head and neck, the trunk, the extremities, the breast, and the perineum. Nursing begins with the preoperative assessment and follows through to the patients’ return to normal activity, encompassing the entire healing process Aim of the study: The aim of this study was to assess nurses’ knowledge and practices regarding preoperative nursing care for elderly patients undergoing plastic surgeries. Research Questions: • What is the nurses’ level of knowledge regarding preoperative nursing care for elderly patients undergoing plastic surgeries ? • What are the nurses’ practices regarding preoperative care for elderly patients undergoing plastic surgeries ? Method: Research design. A descriptive study design had been utilized to carry out this study. Setting of the study. This study was carried out at the plastic surgery department, burn department, Very Important Persons department and the operating room of Mansoura New General Hospital. Subjects. A convenience sample of 82 nurses who were working at the previously selected settings who accept to participate in study . Tools of data collection. Three tools were used to collect data relevant to the study: ‎ Tool I: Nurses’ Structured Interview Schedule. This tool was designed by the researcher to collect the required data. It was comprising data such as: age, sex, marital status, religion, years of experience, unit, qualification, job title, experience years, and previous attendance of training program about preoperative nursing care about plastic surgeries.
