Abstract

Over the past decades, the importance of evaluating the performance of construction projects has increased due to the importance of construction industry in increasing national income and providing many job opportunities throughout the country. The traditional methods of evaluating projects are no longer useful in light of their continuous progress, innovation and increasing importance. The success of the project is no longer linked only to the completion of the project on time or according to the planned cost. Therefore, research has forced in the field of evaluating engineering projects and how to improve their performance using key performance indicators. Britain was one of the pioneering countries in the field of developing project performance evaluation by providing the world with what is called key performance performance indicators for project performance evaluation. The objective of this research is to identify and evaluate key performance indicators and to develop a Project Index (PI) for the Egyptian construction industry. The proposed project index will help construction companies to evaluate their performance based on this project index and thus identify methods for improvement.literature reviews of previous research identified and summarized 12 Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and the methods of calculating each of them. A questionnaire was conducted to determine the importance of the 12 indicators in terms of the most important to the least important by using Relative Important Index (RII), and then another questionnaire to make pairwise comparisons between the most important KPIs to give weight to each by using the fuzzy analytical hierarchy process and then merging KPIs into an one index called Project Index (PI) by multiplying the actual value of it in the project using the mathematical equations for each of them in the weight resulting from the fuzzy analytical hierarchy process). Then PI was validated in an case study project to evaluate its performance. The results indicated the importance of 8 KPIs for evaluating the performance of the Egyptian project and weighing each of them as follows: cost 0.17 - schedule 0.22 - profit 0.19 - safety 0.04 - quality 0.12 - productivity 0.05 - team satisfaction 0.03 - Client satisfaction 0.17. And the index was applied to a case study project in Cairo, and the result of PI was 1.4, which is a very good number indicating good performance by the workers on the project.
