Abstract

This thesis concentrates on the hydrodynamics and water quality of different water bodies: manmade coastal lagoons presented in El Gouna artificial lagoons and natural rivers represented by the third reach of the Nile River in Egypt. For El Gouna lagoons, the main aim was to gain a deep insight into the hydrodynamics and water quality of El Gouna artificial lagoons. A deep understanding of the hydrodynamics and water quality processes of El Gouna lagoons helps to protect and preserve their vital ecosystems and is a step forward to ensure sustainable water management in the surrounding touristic hotspots. The obtained results could be useful for the implementation of the national water resources plan and for the numerous stakeholders in the region. While in the Nile River, this work aimed to properly simulate the third reach of the Nile River in Egypt (between the Naga Hammadi barrage and the Asyut barrage) and its water quality using automatic model calibration based on the Dual-Annealing optimisation method. Also, the effect of the lateral inflow from drains and factories on the water quality in the whole domain, as well as the nearby inflow areas, was discussed. Moreover, effects of different future scenarios such as low flows and climate change on the water quality of the river were investigated.
