Abstract

Type 1 Diabetes is a potentially life-threatening multifactorial autoimmune disorder characterized by T-cell-mediated destruction of pancreatic β cells, resulting in a deficiency of insulin synthesis and secretion. The incidence of T1D has been rising globally since the 1950s, with an average annual increase of 3–4% over the past three decades. In particular, the incidence of childhood T1D is increasing, most rapidly in populations that previously had low incidence, and varying by ethnicity and race (Akil et al., 2021). This study was a descriptive cross-sectional study conducted at Pediatric Diabetes Outpatient Clinic of Mansoura University Children`s Hospital over 12 months between March 2022 and March 2023. An approval was obtained from ethical committee (IRB) in faculty of medicine before conducting the study. Written consent was obtained from all parents and Adolescent before inclusion of the study. This study included 350 case of T1DM, their mean age was 13.86±1.95, 44.3% of them were males and 76.3% were rural residents. The prevalence of eating disorders among studied cases was 79 case (22.6%). There is statistically significant difference between cases with and without eating disorders as regard their socioeconomic status with high socioeconomic status is associated with eating disorders than cases with no eating disorders. There is significant higher frequency of DKA, hospital admission and diabetic nephropathy among cases with eating disorder than cases with no eating disorders (72.2% vs, 60.1% respectively). There is statistically significant higher waist circumference values among female cases with eating disorders compared to those without eating disorders. There is a statistically significant higher frequency of eating disorders among children with T1D in tanner staging 3 and statically significant lower frequency of eating disorders in tanner staging 2 compared to those without EDs at the same tanner stage. There is statistically significant higher median total body muscle mass among cases with no eating disorders than cases with eating disorders (38 vs, 34.1 kg). Conclusion: Eating disorders are prevalent among adolescents with type 1 diabetes, and those with eating problems showed higher frequency of DKA, hospital admission and diabetic nephropathy. Patients with eating disorders had higher waist circumference and lower median total body muscle mass. Poor diabetic control is more frequent among Bulimia nervosa and binge eating.
