Abstract

Globally, there are many and various medical conditions that require transfusion of blood or one of its components to the patient. Nursing care for these patients focused on knowledge of blood components, previous assessment skills, and knowledge of details. Nurses are generally trained in blood transfusion procedures during their years of service. Aim: Develop a blood transfusion educational booklet for nurses based on pre-estimated assessment. Method: A descriptive, cross- sectional design was used for this study and it was conducted at Specialized Medical Hospital, Mansoura University. A convenience sample of 80 nurses from both sexes was enrolled. Tools: Two tools included routine blood transfusion knowledge questionnaire, and blood transfusion performance checklist. Results: Regarding the overall score of the nurses’ knowledge levels about blood transfusions studied. The unsatisfactory level of total knowledge was 83.8% and the satisfactory knowledge was 16.2%. With regard to the total score of the nurses’ performance levels, the unsatisfactory level of the total performance was 31.2%, while the satisfactory information was 68.8%. There is a significant, positive and strong relationship between information and performance of nurses. Conclusion: this study revealed that there was a significant deficit of knowledge and a satisfactory level of practice regarding the blood transfusion among studied nurses. Recommendations: nurses and hospital should struggle to improve the quality and safety of blood transfusion because it is a potentially hazardous procedure, and this will be maintained through establishing an educational booklet containing all necessary information about blood transfusion, receiving a training program in blood transfusion, and statement of hospital blood transfusion policy.
