Abstract

Introduction: Health-care-associated infections prolong the length of stay in the hospital, increase the risk of mortality, and are a substantial burden on healthcare services and populations. Antimicrobial resistance is intensifying this problem and effective evidence-based prevention program are needed to reduce the risk of health-care-associated infections. The hospital environment is a reservoir for the transmission of microorganisms that can lead to infection. Some microorganisms can survive in a hospital for several months, posing an ongoing transmission risk unless removed by cleaning. Cleaning practices can reduce the risk of acquisition and highlights the critical role of environmental hygiene in infection prevention and control. Aim: The study aims to evaluate the effect of implementing training sessions on improving neonatal health care workers’ knowledge and performance about environmental cleaning bundle Method: A quasi-experimental study design used (one-group pre-posttests) to conduct this study. The study included all on-job; (22) nurses, (4) environmental service workers, (8) infection prevention and control team members, recruited conveniently, during the period of three months of the study at the NICU. Tools of data collection: Tool I: Healthcare workers’ socio-demographic and occupational characteristics structured self-administrated questionnaire. Tool II: Healthcare workers’ knowledge structured self-administrated questionnaire. Tool III: Healthcare workers’ performance observational checklist. Setting: The study was carried out at the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) affiliated to Kafr-Saad General Hospital. Results: The results of the study were presented in 17 tables. The study resulted in a gradual and clear improvement in the knowledge and level of performance of all neonatal health care workers regarding the environmental cleaning bundle after the implementation of the training sessions. There is a highly statistically significant correlation between the total knowledge and the total performance of all neonatal health care workers in both post-one and post-two tests regarding the environmental cleaning bundle. The majority of infection control team members confirmed the presence of all elements of the performance observational checklist, except the elements of applying environmental sampling after the construction of critical care areas and for short-term evaluation of the impact of infection-control measures or changes in infection-control protocols, PPE shall be provided for all housekeeping staff and replaced when defective and monitoring and documenting adherence to proper PPE selection and use, including donning and doffing. Conclusion& Recommendations: Depending on the findings of the current study; neonatal health care workers’ knowledge and performance of environmental cleaning bundle in the neonatal intensive care unit are improved after the training sessions’ implementation in post-one, as well as post-two than before its implementation. The training session course can be considered workable, collaborative, and worthy of widespread use.
