Abstract

Forty years of experience in creating alternative urban communities within the Egyptian desert continues with limited success in achieving the goals of sustainable development. Therefore, it was necessary to conduct a continuous and accurate assessment of alternative housing environments to meet the challenges of urban development and management. However, city managers and planners often face difficulties in making appropriate and detailed assessments of the conditions for sustainable urban development, and the challenges posed by urban design elements. The need to assess people’s changing needs and to achieve sustainable buildings and urban communities has drawn increasing attention internationally. Therefore, the dissertation approach is to focus on the design concept of sustainable alternative housing environments as an important measure of sustainable urban development. The main objective of the dissertation is to develop a local, systematic and practical evaluation framework and to set guidelines for how to improve the performance of alternative urban communities for informal areas according to the green building rating system, highlighting deficiencies in various sectors to maintain environmental balance and direct urban development towards achieving sustainability in urban design. Through a set of assessment procedures for a model of Egyptian neighborhoods (Al Asmarat neighborhood) Cairo as a means of providing a powerful tool for planners and city managers to make rational decisions when allocating investment and local resources across different sectors in order to achieve urban sustainability. The end result is to present a number of recommendations to the General Organization for Urban Planning (GOPP).
