Abstract

Human cytomegalovirus infection is correlated with enhanced COX-2 expression in breast cancer. Our study aimed to through a beam of light on HCMV as a viral etiology of breast tumors, investigate the association between HCMV infection and simultaneous expression of COX2 in women with breast tumors. Participate as a multidisciplinary team with clinicians to change modalities of breast cancer management based on viral etiology was another aim in this study. This study was conducted on 90 female patients attending the surgical units at Oncology Center, Faculty of Medicine, Mansoura University (OCMU) from September 2021 to August 2023. Patients in this study were divided into two main groups: group I (cases) included patients with breast tumors, which was subdivided into 33 (36.7%) breast cancer patients (group IA) and 24 (26.6%) patients with benign breast lesions (group IB). Thirty-three matched females undergoing breast surgery for breast reconstruction (36.7%) (control). We assessed the presence of HCMV IE and glycoprotein B genes by nested type PCR and multiplex nested PCR respectively in breast tisssues. Also COX-2 was assessed by ELISA in breast tissues. Human cytomegalovirus was assessed in BC paraffin tissues by IHC. Samples obtained from 33 breast cancer (BC) patients, 24 benign breast lesions, and 33 normal breast tissues.
