Abstract

People living with visual disabilities (low vision and blindness) are more likely to get infected than people without visual disabilities. Hand hygiene is a way of cleaning one’s hands that substantially reduces the potential microbial load on the hands. Keeping hands clean helps prevent the spread of germs. In general, pupils with blindness depend much more on sound, speech, and touch to orient them to s situation. So, alternative teaching aids such as booklets typed in Braille and audio can be used for teaching those pupils. This combination of audio, Braille, and tactile models is an effective way to provide health education for children with visual impairments. Aim: This study aimed to design a health educational package regarding hand hygiene for pupils with blindness. Method: Two study designs in the current study: A qualitative study design that combine phenomenological study and an experts’ opinions (Delphi) design. The researcher enrolled 39 pupils with blindness conveniently and 15 experts purposefully for two Delphi round. Tools: The researcher developed a tool for data collection after reviewing related and recent literature, divided into six parts. This tool was used for the preliminary assessment, Delphi survey, and evaluation stage. Results: Most of these pupils with blindness were interested in knowing more about the definition, importance, key times, and steps for hand hygiene. Expert panelists recommended that the design of the health educational package booklet be typed in braille, audio, and maquette that suit all aspects of the physical characteristics of pupils with blindness. The researcher concludes that almost all pupils with blindness and expert panelists strongly agreed on all domains of the designed health educational package regarding hand hygiene. Accordingly, the researcher recommends adopting as well as disseminating the designed health education package to pupils with blindness in their schools (library) and homes across the national scale.
