Abstract

This study was concerned with studying the effect of Asphalt-Rubber, as a binder, on rutting characteristics of asphalt mixes. Based on the testing methods adopted, the used materials and results obtained the following conclusions could be obtained :
1-Rubberized mixtures can be expected to exhibit lower stability ( except at low rubber content, 10.0% by asphalt weight), lower unit weights, higher air voids and higher flow values than conventional mixes. An air voids value inside the specification limits (3.0 – 5.0 ) can be obtained for rubberized mixes ( except at high rubber contents, 30.0% by asphalt weight).
2-The increase of mineral filler percent, when keeping the binder content percent constant, reduced the stability, unit weight and flow values for all rubberized mixes. However, this increase in mineral filler percentage exhibited higher air voids ( than the specification limits for all rubberized mixes) which was the reverse for conventional mix.
3-For mix stiffness values in the standard creep test ( as a measure of rutting resistance) there was an optimum rubber content which was 10.0% ( by asphalt weight ) at all filler levels. However, all rubberized mixes exhibited higher mix stiffness than conventional mix at all filler levels.
