Abstract

This thesis investigates the effect of groundwater flow through fissures on the rock slope stability. The main objective is to study the water pressure forces on fissured rock side slope .It can be said that the existence of fissures reduces its resistance to slipping ,as the flow of water through these fissures change the water pressure force which is considered one of the major factors affecting the stability of side slopes. As some of the rocks suffer from weathering in a way that causes cracking and fissuring, these fissures, normally, concentrate on the upper part of the slope and sometimes extend to deeper depths . The existence of fissures influences the distribution of water pressure which in turn affects the value, direction and position of the integrated water pressure force on the expected slip surface. This influence varies according to the volume, extension with depth and distribution pattern of these fissures. The finite element software product Seep/w was used to model the movement and pore water pressure distribution within porous material ?as rock with fissures ?. The study includes the effect of size and distribution of fissures on the value of the integrated water pressure on the critical slip surface. Sometimes fissures are filled with foreign materials as a result of wind and weathering differing in their hydraulic properties from the original rock .This in turn plays a role on the value of the integrated water pressure force. A finite element twophase flow numerical model is adopted to study the influence of different factors on the value of the integrated water pressure force. Graphical correlations are constructed between the parameters representing these factors and the water pressure force.
