Abstract

Traction therapy is a very efficient method of overcoming Muscle spasm, maintaining alignment in fractures and in overcoming joint contractures. The orthopaedic surgeon must be experienced with the different techniques of traction since it gives him an altetnative method of treating nearly every major fractures. Anyone of us may employ traction when we choose to avoid surgery or perhaps find ourselves practicing in circumstances devoid of modern operating rooms. Our aim in this study was to evaluate the importance of lower limb traction in Mansoura University Hospital and to record the complications of skin and skeletal and so we can recommend how to avoid and how to treat these complications. The work presented the experience and results gained from the treatment of one hundred patients with different traumatic and non traumatic disorders of the lower limb. They were treated by either skin (28%) or skeletal (72%) traction. 67% of our cases were males and 33% were females. Their age was 60 - 90 years old with average 48 years. On admission, patients were subjected to careful history taking, general and orthopaedic examination. They were followed up , clinically and radiologically while on traction and any complications were recorded.
