Abstract

The present study was carried out on 30 children with acute leukemia with their age ranging from 14 months to 168 months. It includes 21 patients (70%) with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), and 9 patients (30%) with acute non -lymphoblastic leukemia (ANLL). 10 healthy children of matched age and sex were selected as a control group. In addition to thorough history and clinical examination, the following investigations were carried out including: Complete blood count (CBC), Bone marrow aspiration (BMA), and assessment of serum IL-l a using ELISA technique at the time of diagnosis and after complete remission . At the time of diagnosis and before induction chemotherapy, serum IL- I a increased significantly in both ALL and ANLL groups versus the control group (P<O.OI and <0.001 respectively). ANLL group showed significantly higher value of serum IL-l a compared to ALL group (P<O.OOOI ). Following induction chemotherapy and after remission, a highly significant difference between the three groups was observed (PO.0034). Both ALL and ANLL group still showed higher level of serum IL- I a compared to the control group (P<O.OI) with no significant difference between both groups of patients.
