Abstract

The present work was conducted to study the effect of morphine and its interaction with other agents that affect intestinal motility. A loop of ileum is put in a bath containing 100ml tyrode I s solution and its end is attached to an isotonic transuducer which is adjusted so that the gut is just str~hed. Gut motility is recorded by oscilograph then a drug is added to tyrode’s solution and the effect is recorded. The data obtained in this study could be summarized as follows: 1) Addition of morphine at different doses ranging from 100pg% to 1000pg% significantly decreased the amplitude of intestinal contractions in a dose dependent manner. Naloxone 40pg% alone has insignificant effect on intestinal motility/but it prevented and also reversed the inhibitory effect of morphine on intestinal motility.
