Abstract

Thirty five cases of bronchial adenomas were diagnosed in the cardiothoracic surgical W1it of Mansoura University hospital in the last 17 years (1977 -1994).they were studied mid rcevied . The patients ranged in age from 12 to 65 years with a mean age at presentation of36 years. Out oftllese 35 patients. 22 cases were females (62.857.) .while only 13 patients (37.1 %) were males. Recurrent hemoptysis was the main presentation of 30 cases in this group (85.7 %) .Irritative cough was present in 13 cases (37.1 %) .and chest pain was present in 10 cases (28.5 %) .Other symptoms included recurrent chest infections, dyspnea and empyema. Carcinoid syndrome and -distant metastasis were not encow1tered in any of our patients. The physical signs were not specific and could be seen in several chest diseases. The duration of symptoms ranged from 2 months to 13 years, with the mean of 48 months. The chest x-rays findings were not specific due to their endobronchial location and associated pulmonarY inflammatory changes. Bronchoscope and biopsy was the most important method for diagnosis of these tumors, and there should not be any hesitation to obtain a biopsy of a lesion suspected to be carcinoid. C. T. examinations of the chest and upper abdomen has almost become a standard diagnostic procedure in patients with pulmonary tumors, as it contributes in tile staging process by evaluation of lymph nodes enlargement and local invasion of the vascular structures or the chest wall. The carcinoids were the commonest pathological type encountered in this series and constituted approximately (77.14 %) , while the mucoepidennoid carcinomas constituted (17.14 %) , and cylindromas were the least in this series (5.7%) .Mixed tumors were not diagnosed in any of the cases.
