Abstract

The aims of this study were, first to assess relation of interleukm-1(3 levels in serum and synovial fluids of rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis patients with different clinical, radiological and laboratory parameters of each disease. In addition, to determine if IL-lf3 concentrations differentially influenced by the drugs used for treatment of each disease. Secondly, examine the ability of low concentrations of IL-lp and TNF-oe, comparable to those found within the osteoarthritic and normal knee joint, to degrade human articular cartilage. The present study was divided into three sections. In the first section, 42 Egyptian patients (21 RA and 21 OA), and 22 (12 RA and 10 OA) English patients, were recruited in the study, to detect concentrations of IL-lp in serum and synovial fluids, and comparing its levels with different clinical, laboratory, and radiological parameters of each disease. Moreover, in 7 out of the 12 RA English patients, serum and synovial fluid levels of IL-lp were measured before and after intraarticular corticosteroid injection, to determine whether corticasteroids can affect levels of IL-lp in serum and/or synovial fluid of RA patients. The results of this section showed that IL-lp concentrations in serum and synovial fluids of RA patients mostly affected by different clinical, radiological and laboratory parameters of the disease. On the contrary, IL-lp levels in OA were not affected by most of the clinical parameters of the disease: 1. Serum IL-lp was significantly correlated with symptoms and signs indicating active inflammation in RA patients in the form of fatigue, morning
