Abstract

Over the last ten years, computers have evolved rapidly and are now used in almost every office and in lots of homes. Applications, such as high-resolution graphics, video conferencing, distance learning, have driving the network technology designers to offer much more bandwidth and service capabilities to their next generation network technologies. This development has led to get-through many high speed computer network technologies such as Fast Ethernet, Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM), Gigabit Ethernet and 10 Gigabit Ethernet. However, in order to maintain such large highly capable networks and to provide services to users in an efficient manner, good network management techniques are necessary especially that focused on the performance evaluation. Monitoring and evaluation of performance of individual network elements and the whole network are one of the main hot topic in the network research field. In this study, the performance evaluation and testing of A TM networks have been reviewed. from this point of view, there are three different techniques that can be used according to the operating phase where the test will be carried. Simulation of a proposed design of the network is first technique used to understand the behaviour of a designed network before its installation. Normally, simulation software is used in this technique. After installation of the network, expensive dedicated hardware testing devices may be used to evaluate the network performance, this is the second technique. The third technique uses low cost software/hardware to evaluate the performance of operating networks during its daily operation to detect any problem encountered. During the course of the work, main features and performance metrics of two emerging high speed network technologies have been studied. They are A TM and Gigabit /10 Gigabit Ethernet technologies.
