Abstract

This research work aimed at obtaining a low cost sustainable technology for domestic wastewater treatment for Egyptian rural areas. It was thought to obtain a low cost technology that would address small communities with population of less than 5000 capita. To make this come through, a high rate hybridized anaerobic baffled reactor was pilot tested for a period of about 18 months in order to assess the state of art and the technical and economic efficiency of this system prior to the implementation on a large scale. This pilot reactor consisted of four reactor lines with each line divided into four compartments. The flow in these reactors is upflow and different types of media were tested within the reactors at different hydraulic retention times. The system was also subjected to both hydraulic and organic shock loads. Results obtained in this thesis showed that this system provides an excellent option for wastewater treatment for small communities in Egypt. Coupled with the high efficiency of the system that reached about (85-90)%, the economic costs both with regards construction and operation and maintenance are tremendously unbelievable. With almost no any electrical and mechanical works required the effluent values obtained were very competitive and satisfied the Egyptian standards.
