Abstract

This landscaping study for children?s gardens in Mansoura city was carried out in the period from 19992002. Eight public gardens were examined. Out of the 8 studied gardens, 4 are located in Mansoura East, and 4 in Mansoura West. Photos were taken to show the important features and play equipment in these gardens. A questioner was designed for these gardens to have data about location, area, design, type number of play equipment, safety and maintenance of the equipment, number of visitors / day during weekends and holidays. The study also focused on problems facing these gardens, and suggestions were made to develop and make better use of them. The studied gardens were the following: 1 Shagrat ElDorr garden 2 Gazirat AlWard garden 3 Arous ElNile garden 4 Azraiean garden 5 Sabah Alkhair garden 6 Happy Land garden 7 Zoo garden 8 Altefl garden This landscaping study revealed the following important results: 1 Number of children?s playground in Mansoura city is not sufficient and dose not fit with population density in both East and West sectors. 2 Area of the children?s playground is very small if compared with the international standards or cities like Cairo and Alexandria. Area of playground for each child in Mansoura city is hardly 0.022 m2. 3 Design of these gardens mostly dose not follow the scientific methods but is governed by the available area and the insufficient resources. 4 Although some trees are randomly distributed in the gardens or even were present before the establishment, they can not fulfill the purposes of shading, colour or reducing noise pollution. Some poisonous and cactus plants have to be eliminated from the children?s playground. 5 Most of the play equipment in the studied gardens are not safe for children use. They are made from unsuitable materials, not according to safety measures, crowded in limited areas. Inspection and maintenance of these equipment are lost. 6 The children playgrounds are also open at main streets jammed with traffic that endanger the children while crossing to or from the gardens. Noise pollution is great from the speedy cars and bad use of horns. This study recommend increasing of the area of the children?s playgrounds in Mansoura city. A national park like that in Cairo or Alexandria city may be established in the site close to the circle road SouthWest of the Mansoura city which was devoted for collecting and burning the rubbish. This park can have different types of children?s gardens of suitable design for needs of the children in the city.
