Abstract

Several techniques were suggested to arrange the artificial anterior teeth in complete denture wearers. The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of the anatomical guidelines versus phonetic guidelines, that used to arrange the anterior teeth, on the speech pattern of complete denture wearers, Twentyfour completely endentulous healthy patients were selected for the study. According to the position of the anterior teeth, the patients were classified into two equal groups: Group (I): consists of 12 patients, where the artificial anterior teeth were firstly arranged according to anatomical guidelines. After 4 weeks of denture insertion, the anterior teeth were then replaced to be arranged according to phonetic guidelines; Group (II): consists of 12 patients, where the artificial anterior teeth were firstly arranged according to phonetics technique. After 4 weeks of denture insertion, the anterior teeth were then replaced to be arranged according to anatomical guidelines technique. The speech pattern of each patient was evaluated subjectively by the Arabic articulation test and objectively (instrumental analysis) by a speech analysis programme before and four weeks after denture insertion for each arrangement technique. The results demonstrated that the use of complete denture can improve the speech pattern of edentulous patients regardless of the arrangement technique of the anterior teeth. A general influence on the speech and voice resulting from variation in the anterior teeth position was demonstrated objectively in this study, although subjectively there is non significant differences between the anatomical and phonetic guidelines in the intelligibility of the tested sounds. These variations were more recorded with the phonetic technique.
