Abstract

Wind energy is promising and clean source of electric energy in the world. So, a careful analysis for wind energy system is required before building it. Induction gen erator is the most suitable generator option in wind energy applications so a careful analysis for this generator has been done in this thesis. A minimum and maximum capacitor required for induction generator to build up has been determined for different load conditions. The wind turbine requires a power conditioning unit to be interconnected with electrical utility. So, a detailed analysis of a power conditioning unit has been shown in the thesis. A power conditioning unit injects a lot of harmonics to electric utility. So, this thesis introduces an effective technique to mitigate these harmonics with IEEE standards. The first part of this thesis deals with the analysis, modeling, and control of the self excited induction machine used as a wind turbine generator and power electronics converters to interconnect the induction generator to electric utility. The DQ axis representation of the selfexcited induction generator has been studied. The minimum, maximum self excited capacitor and operating frequency has been calculated for different operating conditions of induction generator using DQ axis representation. The second part of this thesis deals with the power electronics converters used in wind energy system. The side effects of the harmonics generated from power electronics converters on the induction generator and on the electrical utility side are studied. Different techniques have been suggested to reduce the harmonics to be lower than IEEE Standards. A technical analysis and studying the theory of operation for different interconnection techniques of wind energy systems with electrical utility has been carried out. A detailed analysis for rectifier side, DCDC converter and the inverter side has been carried out. A simulation of the wind energy system and power electronics converters has been carried out using PSIM computer software.
