Abstract

In recent years various investigation have turned attention to the pathophysiology of gall stone formation. The normal physiology of bile and alterations that lead to the precipitation of cholesterol and formation of gall stones has long puzzled the investigators until the concept concerning the inter relationship of cholesterol, lecithin and bile salt was proposed by Admirand and Small,(1967) • In addition to genetic, environmental, dieteryand racial factors which may alter bile composition in favour of precipitation of cholesterol, there are acquired states of health or diseases that are also associated with litho¬genic bile and a higher incidence of gall stones; pregnancy, obesity weigh loosing state ”ileal bypass ff and cirrhosis , (Valahcevic et al., 1973). Two concepts have been speculated in the pathogenesis of gall stones, Small et al., (1968) pursued the concept that the physiochemical properties of lipids in bile held the key to understanding .formation of stones, Admirand and Small, (1968) • If the concentration of bile salts or lecithin falls a critical level cholesterol precipitates from bile. On the other hand one popular theory held that infection in the wall.
